TUTORIAL ON THE NEEDS TO INCORPORATE AEROELASTIC ASPECTS INTO THE CONCEPTUAL DESIGN PROCESS
Johannes Schweiger
Abstract
The paper gives an overview on potential impacts from aeroelasticity on the definition of global aircraft design parameters, on the vehicle's mass properties and on performance data, as well as inverse views from aircraft design requirements and global configuration design parameters on the possible magnitudes of aeroelastic impacts.
Some examples are shown, where aeroelasticity was essential for the success or failure of projects. This also includes a review of engineering methods to identify and quantify aeroelastic effects and their interactions with other disciplines. The last sections deal
with the diffculties to establish the proper analytical models and generate the required input data for aeroelastic analysis at the start of a new project.
